Blood (Anderson Armstrong) has won the Soca Royale competition after winning the Party Monarch competition with his popular “Foot on Fire” and then winning after a no-contest from TC who won the Sweet Soca competition with “Down de Road”.
TC’s win was not well accepted by the audience who started to boo as soon as they realized the results. So loud and intense was the booing that MC Mac Fingall had to remind the audience that the judges’ decision was final and that it was not TC who judged herself into first position.
After it was realized that TC was not going to take part in the face-off with Blood for the Soca Royale title, Blood came to the stage and asked the crowd, who by that time had started to chant “We want Blood” to settle down and realize that even though the decision was not a popular one, it must be accepted. Blood, being the perfect gentleman he is, then invited TC on to the stage when he performed his winning song. Blood won a Red Kia Cerrato worth BD $89,000 which he said is well timed as he has been renting a car for the last 3 weeks!
The Sweet Soca competition started at just after 1 pm with performances by Mr. Dale with his extremely popular Drop It. He stated in an interview with the Admiral that he thought that being the first to perform would be slightly disadvantageous due to the small crowd but was pleasantly surprised with the crowd response. Next to perform were Lil Rick with What a Feeling, Kirk Brown with Dat is all I Want, Khiomal – Whine on you, Mikey – My Party, Brett Linton – Can’t stop this party, TC – Down de Road and Blood with Boom Bam.
A few of the performers including Kirk Brown and Brett Linton seemed to suffer with hoarseness which led to them shouting at times. They need to give their voices a rest in the future if they hope to raise their standard of performance.
After a break, the Party Monarch got off to a rousing start with Khiomal singing "Don’t tell me nothing" and this energy was carried right through all the rest of the performances with the Soca Kartel’s being the most impressive and dynamic with De Whole Place Mash Up.
Some presentations seemed to be a tad long especially Edwins’ which saw his entrance by helicopter being delayed as he asked the pilot, Captain Paul Archer, to circle Bushy Park once more so that he could take a picture of the audience as he explained, he may “never get another chance”. He ended the performance in a race car to as he explained “christen Bushy Park”.
